Marketing Your Small Business For Free by Walt Barrett
You know, I wouldn't be writing this little piece if it was not for the number of emails I receive from the many people who have started small businesses selling our products. They all start with the same question, "How do I get more customers?" Well it's a lot more simple today then it was back in the nineteen forties when I started selling. Unless you were some big time company with a ton of money to spend all you had was your own big mouth, business cards, printed flyer's, the radio, and the newspaper if you could afford any them, and any free shoppers guides and bulletin boards in markets and coffee shops, and advertising on your vehicle. I'm sure I missed something, but it was a long time ago. I'm sure many of you can fill in the blanks.
Well it's a little easier today because you still have all of the above, but now you have the great equalizer, the playing field leveler, the almighty Internet. Now. whose better than you? The Internet has so many places to advertise for free that you couldn't possibly use them all. For us, Internet video has always been the all time killer app. We started using video on the Internet way before there was any YouTube. I believe our first ad was for a battery backup power pack for cell phones. A lot of people were still on twisted pair phone lines in those days and video was very slow, but all that soon changed. Just one of our video ads has brought us nearly a half million customers. So my point is that video and photo slide shows are an excellent way to market products if you put then on You Tube and embed them in your web site. Video is my number one choice for marketing. So Get a cheap digital video/still camera and start shooing. Don't worry about making a fool out of yourself, I do it all the time, but the sales are coming in and we laugh all the way to the bank. If you make video always use a tripod. No-one likes shaky video and make sure your sound is decent. You can edit with the free software from windows that comes with any computer. It's great for commercials and you can dub the sound in with your mike. You don't need the camera sound and can erase it on the editor. You can load the video to your blogs and web pages too. See my video blogs.
I also like to use the free advertising web sites. My favorite free print advertising web site is www.craigslist.org . I wish I owned it, lol! There are thousands of free want ad web pages. Be sure to pick the ones with the highest traffic counts.
The bottom line is to mention and expose your company and product lines everywhere you possibly can and spend as little money as possible in the process. You should use all of the methods I have mentioned in the above text.
Use your start up money wisely because, "Overhead is the monster that eats business's"

A Low Overhead Green Furniture Recycling Business by Walt Barrett
This is interesting because yesterday I did a blog about Recycling discarded bicycles as an inexpensive business start up. I have a love affair with low start up - low overhead business and I always have because as a kid in the bad times I was a dump picker and I am not ashamed to say it.
Well anyway, I have had six strokes this year and my doctors do not want me driving any more. So yesterday my wife drove me in to the doctor for a check up and now that I am no longer driving I get to see a whole lot more of the surrounding scenery that we are driving through. Well anyway on the way home, about a mile up the street from the medical building I spotted a very old but nice looking set of Mission style chairs heaped up on the curb waiting for the trash pickup. I think if we had been driving our F250 pickup I would have had my wife pull over so I could load them in, but seeing as we had her Corolla I had to pass them up. The point I want to make is that an ambitious person could spend a couple of days cleaning them up and they could have brought as much as $500.00 for the set. The reason being is that they were very old and obviously of very high quality wood and well crafted. I would have just cleaned them and and given them a light oiling. It's best not to fool around with the finish on old furniture as you could ruin the value. Leave the finish to the buyer.
Now I see this kind of stuff all the time, but I am only one person and how many businesses can a person get involved with? I have too many as it is! I write about these things because after being marries for 59 years and raising five kids we have been in some financial binds in our earlier years and I have had to run many a small enterprise in order to keep our collective heads above water. But let me tell you, recycling used furniture is easy and a darn good way to make some real extra cash. The next piece I write will be about how I have always marketed all the products from my little enterprises.
By the way, thanks be to God i have still not been seriously impaired by this current string of strokes and I really appreciate all the prayers from my Internet friends and family.
Have a great day and God Bless.

A Great Free Green Bicycle Business Idea by Walt Barrett
I heard on the news this morning that this year since the major increase in gasoline prices that the sales of bicycles and motor scooters have doubled. Naturally that means a lot of people are going to want to get into one of those businesses. Well I'm going to tell you how to do it with no money at all.
Many people who know me also know that when I was a kid in the great depression we were very poor like many others. It was a lot worse than it is now, although we seem to be heading in that direction again thanks to some very poor government. I have often told the story of getting my first bicycle by dump picking for the parts. Well it's a lot easier these days. I have noticed on trash day as I drive through our local cities that people are leaving near perfect bicycles on the curb to be picked up. Most bike parts are interchangeable so all you have to do is start collecting them and use some for parts to fix the others and you have an instant green backyard business that you can expand to any size you want and even parlay it into an electric scooter dealership. The best part is that you don't need a dime to start it and you can learn about fixing bikes for free on the Internet. Believe me, recycling is very profitable. I did it with batteries twenty-five years ago (Battery Chem) and never looked back! Don't be too quick about renting a shop either. Remember what I always say, "Overhead is the monster that eats businesses."

An Important Message From Walt Barrett about The Battery Chem Forklift Battery Reconditioning Program
We are writing this letter to you because in the past you have either asked for a free battery reconditioning manual, or have purchased our battery reconditioning products. Some of our dealers have said that they could not get enough used automotive batteries to recondition. Well we have a solution to that problem. We have gone into the electric forklift batteries and there are thousands of them in every state. Last year we had a client come to us with three very large electric forklift batteries that were in terrible condition and also very old. They had sat in a very cold warehouse for three years.
They were nearly dried out inside but still read 36 volts each. The cells would not pass a load test though. Well we decided to recondition them anyway as a test and follow them by checking periodically with the owner. We started by adding the missing water from the cells and then we added one-third (1/3) of a cup of Battery Chem per cell. After that we gave them a full charging session and put them into service. I was very doubtful myself as to the outcome, but to my surprise they have been working perfectly now for over a year. The owner of these batteries is very happy with us and our product because we have saved him a total of nearly $20,000.00 in replacement costs for the three batteries.
The point I want to make here is that there are thousands of electric forklifts all over the USA in warehouses and most of them are terribly neglected. Because of this we have expanded our company and also have a new forklift service training film and manual for our regular and new dealers and they describe the entire forklift battery reconditioning process. As usual, if you contact us we will train you 100% free and sell you battery chem as needed. We will also show you how easy it is to get these new forklift clients and where to find them. We have a great new free program lined up for you. Our dealers are charging $500.00 per battery to recondition them and offer an additional service contract for $100.00 a service call. Believe me, at easily $7000.00 replacement cost these companies should be glad to see you. If you work hard and do the marketing program you can make from $500.00 to $5000,00 a week.
We did the battery shown in the training film in fifteen minutes. You do them on site and use their charger. If you are interested in this free information please contact me at: BatteryChem@aol.com

Our Students Can Defuse The Consumption Bomb by Walt Barrett
I received a very well written letter the other day from a 18 year old high school senior who writes a heck of a lot better than I do, and that is for sure. I mean that letter really rocked and it cheered me up. He actually thanked me for inspiring him about Green business and I felt cheered up after suffering four strokes already this year. That will sure get you down.
We are always complaining about the ability of our younger generation to read, and write properly and God knows I make enough mistakes myself, but at least I try, lol. Well anyway, I was really impressed by what the young man had to say concerning green businesses, and how he intended to explore the possibilities of incorporating green business ideas into his dad's repair shop to expand it. He had a lot of good ideas, and I believe he will succeed. So I was sitting here in my think tank this morning thinking about the massive consumption bomb that the world has been building for the last 5000 years, and the rate of growth is accelerating faster than a colony of earthworms, that is a geometric progression. Well it finally hit me that we can solve the problem the same way we are solving the smoking problem, and that is through our schools and more advertising. Now we have the Internet and it seems that young people spend much time there. So we can start to introduce some little anti consumption ads on our web pages and blogs at no cost. I'm working on a new blog called (Green Living + Green Business = Green Pockets) That is the title of another blog I write. That title is going to be my national slogan for my green living campaign. If we can persuade our students to consume less we will be doing them several large favors because living green does put more money in your pockets, and like I always say in my sales pitches, "Who doesn't want to save money?" Prices are going higher and higher mostly because the high cost of fuel affects everything. We should be making a point of this with our massive student population. How about what green living does for you health? Living longer and feeling better is an idea that captures the attention of most people. "Live green, feel better, live longer" I got a million of them folks!
A few examples of saving money. Buying water is about $365.00 a year for one bottle a day, smoking $2500.00 a year, drinking beer $1200.00 a year, buying lunches instead of packing them $1000.00 a year up, wasting gasoline by wasting trips, easily $5.00 a day, driving a gas hog $20.00 a day or more. These are just a few off hand items that I see every day. Then, on top of that, if we can persuade them to recycle everything in sight that will be another huge savings. Just think what a school system could do with the aluminum can money alone! If I had my way there would never be a general trash pickup. Everything would be recycle, and we would not ever send garbage, or leaves to a land fill. We would send them to a loam factory/earthworm farm and grow the fresh food right there too. We compost everything. We also have to cut down on the distances we ship products. We should also be using more rail transportation costs. Let the trucks haul from the rail yards to the local businesses etc.
So my point is that if we campaign more to our young people about this we are bound to make some progress with this massive consumption problem by attrition if nothing else. There are many young people who are already thinking about these problems and we should be encouraging them because everyone needs encouraging. We need to teach them to take a simple but scientific approach to this monster of a problem. The students who listen will be the millionaires of the future
Personally I have decided to do little print campaigns on all my web sites and blogs. I am depending on the students and I believe the students will defuse the population bomb. What is your Idea?
